I booked in a session in the Recording Studio with fellow
class member, Ben, so that we could practise our 2-track Vocal recording
skills. Attached is the audio file which is the product of that session,
unfortunately my vocals aren’t very audible (I probably wasn’t close enough to
the microphone) but we thought that we could fix that when practising our
mixing skills!
Here are the steps we took to make that recording:
Here are the steps we took to make that recording:
1)
After turning on equipment in the Control Room,
we set up two microphones in the Live Room which we plugged into the Stage Box.
We settled on two Shure SM58’s as they are good at capturing the warmth and
clarity of a voice. We also plugged into two pairs of headphones into the stage
box.
2)
I then returned to the Control Room, leaving Ben
in the Live Room in order to set up talk back to both pairs of headphones and
to carry out a sound check. I asked him through talk back to make sounds at a
variety of volumes so that I could prevent peaking using the gain control. I
also panned Ben’s track to the Right as that was where he was standing in the
Live Room.
3)
After I was happy with this, we switched places
and Ben did the same, ensuring that I wasn’t peaking either and panning me to
the Left.
4)
We then decided that we wished to set up fold back
as well so we once again took turns setting this up. It was then that we became
confused as Ben could still hear himself in the headphones without Auxiliary 2
(which he was on) being turned up. We attempted to fix this and realised that
the higher the gain the louder it became, yet this still didn’t fix the
problem. After spending a lot of time trying to resolve this we decided, that
due to time pressure, we should just move Ben’s headphones and microphone over
to Channel 3 and Headphone C.
5)
After that was sorted, we then proceeded to
record our first 2-track vocal recording session. However, embarrassingly, we
had forgotten to change the input to input 3 on Pro Tools, therefore, we had
basically recorded me talk to myself!
6)
After changing the input on Pro Tools, we then proceeded
to record ourselves once again!
7)
After tidying the studio, I asked Pete about the
problem with the Channel and he informed me as to why this had occurred!
